Change of Plans

Ford Europe recently held a live stream press event to announce their future plans with an eye towards electrification. Ford of Europe president Stuart Rowley outlined the company's revised plans to offer a full EV lineup in Europe by 2030. The new plan takes a significantly more aggressive approach than the company previously had in place.

Catching Up

This move comes as a response to the more progressive approach taken by many other manufacturers. Ford Europe knew they had to catch u. So, it's no surprise that they're taking action with a massive new investment strategy that will see them spending $22 billion by 2025. It also helps that the company returned to profitability in the final quarter of 2020, thanks in no small part to their commercial vehicle sales.

Transforming the Cologne Facility

A huge element of this plan that helps Ford's European operations save on costs while rapidly expanding their EV lineup is their partnership with VW Group. Ford will be investing heavily in its manufacturing facility in Cologne, Germany. The site will be transformed into the hub of EV manufacturing in the coming years.

Targeting Europe

According to Rowley, the first vehicle on the assembly line at the Cologne plant will be based on Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform. He also emphasized the importance of creating a lineup that is targeted specifically for the European market, focusing on 'building volume' with their operations in the continent.

EVs and CVs

Passenger vehicles won't be the only products that Ford Europe will be looking to transition toward electrification within the next decade. The company's commercial vehicle lineup will also be 100% zero-emission-capable as early as 2024. That means full EVs and plug-in hybrids will make up Ford's commercial vehicle line.

The Wheels Are in Motion

Europe's ever-evolving emission regulations have pushed auto manufacturers to aggressively expand their EV production in the coming decade. And this move by Ford will ensure they will remain competitive in the market for the medium-term future. As mentioned, putting this vast plan in motion will be transforming the Cologne plant, which has been Ford's manufacturing center in Germany for 90 years.
