HJ45 Landcruiser Gets EV Conversion With Tesla Components
Why not get the best of both worlds? This EV-swap features a timeless classic Toyota Land Cruiser and futuristic Tesla power.
One of a Kind E-Cruiser
Electric Car Cafe, located in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, has picked up the business of taking classic vehicles and converting them to EVs. Their first project? The legendary 45-series Land Cruiser. Chris, the current owner hailing from Perth, Australia has dreams of taking his E-Cruiser far into the Outback, and the team at Electric Car Cafe has just the means to make it happen. The group hopes to give the Land Cruiser a range between 400-500 kilometers on a single charge. Furthermore, Chris hopes to include a rooftop tent, drawer system, fridge, auxiliary electrical systems, recovery gear, and more. In the latest video from ECC, the crew shows just how far they’ve gotten in the build.

Modern Amenities
First, the Cruiser had its original six-cylinder H-series diesel engine pulled. The remaining components were stripped and the bay got a rust treatment and repainting. Next up was stripping the interior, applying sound deadening, and then installing new upholstery. The ECC crew even added heated seats for additional comfort.

150 V of Tesla Power
Under the hood, a new electric motor and six-cell Tesla battery pack replace the HJ45’s old power plant. It’s water-cooled, charged with a DC-DC setup, and totals around 150 V. This is a bespoke design created by the ECC team specifically for the HJ45. They hope to eventually have their own EV kit for a plug-and-play conversion on future projects. Inside you’ll find the team also added a battery gauge to show the remaining range.

From Garage Ornament to Daily Driver
Overall, the new setup puts out more power than the HJ45’s previous diesel setup according to ECC. That’s not the only thing that got upgraded though. The crew also made sure to throw in electric power steering and power brakes to make the HJ a proper daily driver. About the only aspect of the driver experience that’ll be original is the Land Cruiser’s four-speed gearbox.

Tough Dog Suspension for the Outback
As of the latest update, the vehicle is about 98% finished. The Cruiser was taken to Jax Tyre & Auto for some fresh white wheels and new tread. With the shoes off, the team at Jax also swapped out the Cruiser’s suspension components for a set of Tough Dog shocks and leaf springs. The manager stated they went with Tough Dog for their superb four-year warranty that cover both road and recreational outdoor use.

Almost There
All that’s left is to tie up some loose ends and throw the old bed, or as the Aussies call it, tray, back on. With the Cruiser nearly complete, we can’t wait to hear what the final specs are. One thing is for sure, it looks great.
