Mission R

The famous Frankfurt Auto Show has gone through a transformation in the past few years, being rebranded to IAA Mobility. Furthermore, it was moved from Frankfurt to Munich this year, with the focus of many manufacturers shifting to environmentally conscious products as opposed to high power and performance. And Porsche made headlines with the reveal of their new all-electric customer racing concept car, the Mission R.

All-Electric Racer

According to the manufacturer, the concept racer may very well be a look into the future of their Cup series, currently using the 992-generation 911 GT3 Cup as the on-track competitor. The Mission R reportedly comes with two electric motors, one for the front axle and one for the rear.

Constant Power

In qualifying mode, the car's most aggressive power setting, the rear motor will produce 644 horsepower while the front unit makes 429. That adds up to 1073 horsepower in total. And Porsche claims the Mission R will be designed to maintain a 671-horsepower output in race mode, regardless of battery charge and thermal conditions.

Efficient For Racing?

Granted, the production version of this concept is still a few years away, as it's slated for 2025 or 2026. And batteries and charging technology may have seen healthy advancements by then. But as it stands, the Mission R is estimated to have an on-track driving range of 25-40 miles in total! And perhaps more concerning is the fact that charging up the battery from 5% to 80% will take a whole 15 minutes! That doesn't sound very exciting for racing, now does it? Imagine racing the 24 hours of Le Mans and needing a 15-minute break every 3 or 4 laps!

Exciting Future

In any case, Porsche decision-makers are excited about an electric future. “The concept study is our vision of all-electric customer motorsports,” said Oliver Blume, chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “The Mission R embodies everything that makes Porsche strong: performance, design, and sustainability.”

918 Successor?

Another important takeaway from the presentation of the Mission R is the possibility that this design may be a preview of the 918's successor. The concept is very similar to the 918 in terms of dimensions and overall proportions.

New Era

All promotional hyperbole, forced excitement, and industry clichés aside, Porsche certainly knows how to make a beautiful car. And whether the Mission R concept hints at the future of the 718, the 911, or a standalone model, it does well to represent the character of the Porsche brand as we move into the new era of automobiles.
