5. Toyota Camry SE Hybrid - 51/53 MPG (44/47 for higher trims)

The Camry has been a contender for the world's best-selling vehicle for decades. The class-leading sedan's motto has always been maximum practicality. And as far as practicality goes, it doesn't get much better than the hybrid variant of the Toyota, which gets 51 mpg in the city and 53 on the highway, for a combined EPA estimate of 52 mpg for the SE trim. Opting for higher trim levels gets you a slightly lower fuel efficiency at 44/47 mpg.

4. Hyundai Sonata Blue Hybrid - 50/54 MPG (45/51 for other trims)

Be prepared to see a lot of Hyundai (and Hyundai-adjacent) models on this list, starting with the latest Sonata Hybrid. The tried and true sedan nameplate can claim to be the top of its class in many categories. Fuel efficiency is one of those for sure. Powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor in the "Blue" trim, the Korean benchmark produces 150 horsepower. Not ground-breaking by any means, but with a curb weight of fewer than 3,500 lbs, the Sonata can achieve an EPA-estimated 52 combined MPG.

3. Kia Niro LX Hybrid - 53/54 MPG (53/45 for higher trims)

Though not officially a Hyundai, the KIA Niro is a product of the same parent company. Arguably the most practical vehicle on the market today, the Niro possesses a spacious interior, a striking design, and a class-leading MPG. No ICE-only version of the Niro is available, meaning the hybrid model is the baseline. Plug-in and full EV versions are available as well. The 139-HP power source is good for 53 MPG in the city and 54 on the freeway.

2. Hyundai Elantra Blue Hybrid - 53/57 MPG (49/52 for higher trims)

Taking the next spot is the Sonata's smaller sibling, the Elantra. This compact sedan gets a significantly less powerful version of the Sonata's mill. Under the hood, you'll find a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder, which combined with the electric motor can put down just 104 horsepower. With its smaller package, it gets a good handful of miles per gallon higher than the Sonata, coming in at 53 city and 56 highway for the "Blue" trim according to EPA estimates.

1. Toyota Prius - 56/57 MPG

The newest iteration of the iconic hybrid hits the market with more than just impressive fuel efficiency. It also arrives with undoubtedly the best styling the nameplate has ever had. The base model hybrid features a 150-HP powertrain with a fantastic fuel economy of 56 around town and 57 MPG on the highway. The Prius is officially the most fuel-efficient (non-plug-in) car for the 2023 model year.

But there is one car discontinued after 2022 that you can still get, with even better gas mileage...

Honorable Mention: 2022 Hyundai Ioniq - 58/60 MPG

That's right, Another Hyundai! The smallest hybrid vehicle from the Korean make sold in the US is capable of a stunning 59 combined MPG. This entry-level hybrid model has been discontinued from 2023 onward. But new and lightly-used examples can still be found on dealer lots all around.

The Ioniq was eliminated by the manufacturer in favor of newer, more advanced hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV models that are hitting the market in the coming years. But if it's the absolute top-of-the-line fuel efficiency you're after without going the plug-in route, the Ioniq is tough to beat.

Honorable Mention: 2022 Honda Insight - 55/49 MPG

Speaking of hybrids discontinued in 2023, the Honda Insight's last hurrah was with the 2022 model year. With the quality associated with the Honda brand, the Insight is another great option for those looking for a practical vehicle.
