Default Acetone

Anyone using Acetone as a fuel additive?

uh...sorry but why? this isn't a high performance vehicle, it is a sophisticated attempt to use technology to improve fuel efficiency in a large SUV. Mine goes plenty fast on regular!

Some indicate that acetone lowers the surface tension of gasoline and allows better atomization, thus a better fuel burn = increased cylinder efficiency = better gas mileage.
One reported a 6 -10 MPG increase with 2-3 ounces of acetone added per 10 gallons of gasoline.

Less added ='d less effect. Acetone is used in many fuel system cleaners.

not sure if it is bad for the cat? I prefer premium instead. shell, Murphy oil, BP, Sunoco!

DJ, when you say better burn are you referring to the average heat release or something more specific? Cylinder flame front and heat release are effected by many things but mostly things like wrinkle, stretch, vorticity, and strain.

Most of the above combustion and flame terms, like the scientific peer review journal bearing that name, are flow field induced and physical not chemical. Swirl and tumble and the kinetic energy breakdown of them during compression actually. Too much velocity through the gap of the plug at the time of ignition and you can put the flame kernel out. Not enough and your fuel doesn't mix or is still burning when the exhaust valve opens. Lots more in link below.

http://www.journals.elsevier.com/combustion-and-flame/

So a better burn and best efficiency can depend on so many wide ranging engine parameters like, bore, stroke, intake port and valve geometry, wall shrouding of valves, compression ratio, wrist pin offset, rod length, piston bowl/crown geometry, head geometry ( quench squish ) and in-cylinder air flow during intake and compression.

What are we looking for? Fast early or slow late combustion? What location of peak pressure/heat release (crank angle) is best? Combustion statistics can be measured. Crank angle locations of the various percent mass fraction burned are a good indicator.

Again what are we looking for? Grocery getter or top fuel dragster?

Been doing this for over 30 years. 10 years pure research working with a physical chemist, physicist, and an aerospace (rocket scientist) PhDs.

Acetone is actually used in combustion research labs as a dopant. Acetone even in small quantiies can be stimulated with high powered ultra-violet laser light. It lights up the coolest intense blue you have ever seen. The intensity of the visible and non visible light can be used to measure the mixing and the actual air/fuel ratio in and near the gap of the spark plug. Or cylinder wide if you have a glass engine. Look up planar laser-induced fluorescence imaging.

We typically used 2-4-4-trimethylpentane ( iso-octane ) instead of pump gas because it is a single component 100R/100M octane fuel. Again the acetone was to get the flourescence for the spectrometer to read. This is just one small example.

You are in my wheelhouse now.

The LFA and newer LZ1 have many features. In 2007/8 Wards did list it in the 10 best for that year.

putting anything besides gasolina or Gasohol(E10), CNG [if equipped] might damage the fuel system and/or catalytic converter

it cost 9,000$ to install one and only on brand new ones

P.E.A (Polyetheramine) fuel cleaners are safe as well...

using random stuff on the internet heh good luck
